Today felt exceptionally cold. I think the high was maybe 1 degree. This is were the test comes to see What you're made of, what kind of a birder you really are. Me? I'm dedicated. I hate the cold, but I love birds more. I went to lunch at noon. The sun was out, reflecting off the ice particles shimmering in the
air. I had to let my car warm up a bit before heading out. There happened to be a couple of Common Ravens hanging out in the road near my office, so I shot them a few times before my fingers started to freeze. I decided to see if I could find the Bohemian Waxwings again today, so I headed towards Valley of the Moon Park. All the trees are covered in frost around  here lately, and it makes for beautiful scenery, especially when the sun hits them just right, giving them a glittery quality.

No waxwings. Not much of anything really. I stopped by Westchester Lagoon which had a handful of brave little Mallards, huddled up on the ice. I shot a few of them, then made the retreat to my car, but not before spotting a bald eagle that was being harassed by a Magpie a ways off on a bluff overlooking the lagoon. I snapped a few photos from afar but nothing that I would boast about. I decided to try to get up closer to the Eagle and get a better shot, since I don't have any good eagle photos yet, I was eager to see if I could capture the large bird. I did manage to get closer to it, but it was deep into the branches of the tree and also into the sun and overexposed. There will be other opportunities. I settled on shooting some Black-capped Chickadees, which turned out nice, and tried for some European Starlings, but they wouldn't stay in one place long enough for me to even turn toward them. Oh well, it was cold, and my time was just about up. Time to retreat back to the warmth of the office. Next time…
